HAPPY CONCERT BAND - BIOS

DOUGLAS AUTREY - Conductor

Douglas Autrey was born in Taft, CA and grew up in Valley Acres, a rural community of Taft. He attended East Bakersfield High School, received an AA degree from Bakersfield College in music and a BA from San Fernando Valley State College (now Cal State Northridge) in Music. He earned his CA Teaching Credential from Fresno State College Extension in Bakersfield, CA. Douglas played tuba while at EBHS earning numerous awards both as first chair and a soloist. He switched to trombone at SFVSC and played in many outstanding groups including the National Jazz Band Finals at St. Louis. He served in the US Army Band at Ft Mac Arthur for 2 years sitting first chair for most of the time and 9 months at Chu Lai, S. Viet Nam in the 6th Army Band where he archived the rank of Staff Sergeant. There he shared the conductors job for the band on all informal performances and played in a jazz combo entertaining the troops in the outer hill positions. Mr. Autrey taught instrumental music at Arvin Union Elementary School District in Arvin, CA for 31 years, was the trombone teacher for Cal State College, Bakersfield, and performed in the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra for 31 years as principal Trombonist. He performed solos, played in numerous church groups, brass groups and casual dance bands while in Bakersfield. Douglas now resides in Los Angeles playing trombone, baritone, flugalbone and Eb tuba (Dixie groups) for casuals, in jazz groups and in churches. He is principal trombonist with the Korean Philharmonic Orchestra and teaches privately. He conducts the Happy Concert Band while at the same time playing along on flugalbone probably being the only performing-conducting musician around.
